Bring up the in-game menu, then resume game (in other words, hit escape key twice), and the car is shifted into first gear. If the car is already going fairly fast, then the clutch is automatically engaged, since engine revs can't match wheels in 1st gear at that speed. It also won't let you shift up manually, so you have to brake until you are going slow enough to shift into 2nd gear. Tested with CS and CT in svn rev 2558.
