Hmmm, could you try setting your texture size to large instead of medium in VDrift.config and tell us if that fixes the problem?

I just downloaded the minimal Windows installer today, and encountered exactly this problem (a blocky mess where the menu text should be). In my case it turned out to be a missing dll: libpng13.dll (the installer seems to have libpng12.dll instead?)

so it works for you if you hace the libpng13.dll?

Yes, if I put libpng13.dll in the VDrift folder, everything works perfectly.

It also works without libpng13.dll, if I replace SDL_image.dll with the one from the zip you posted in this thread. So my guess is that it's just a mismatch between the versions of SDL and libpng in the installer, and replacing one library or the other seems to fix it.

I was actually trying to figure out where the game was looking for the textures, but noticed the "file not found" errors for the missing dll instead.

So, should we repackage the Windows version with this libpng? Or is there a better solution? It seems folks are having problems installing on Windows more often than not. Of course, it's hard to tell because people don't always report when things work well...

We need to either come up with a package for Windows that will work for everyone, or at least figure out the best way to reliably fix the packages that we have up for download now, and write down instructions we can point people to when they have these problems.

From Microsoft's site, which is linked from the google search...there are two different versions, I'm not sure which one you need. wmd772, who originally figured out that this fixed things for him, said that he used version 2.0. Here's the post regarding that:

whoever has this problem just change libpng12.dll with libpng13.dll file and you are done
