Curb friction
The friction is the same, but because the curb is bumpy, the car's tires don't glide over it as easily as a smooth surface, causing the illusion of increased grip. It's actually correct, I believe, as I've heard a lot of people complain about the fact that in GT4, you can run over the kerb going 100 mph and it doesn't affect your car's performance at all. Realistically it should cause you to lose control (or at least upset the car somewhat). In fact, I think it's been used to start a drift before in some competitions (another trick is to drop the rear tires off of the pavement to get them sliding)... but I may be wrong there.
