Failed to load sound files
I get the following errors as soon as the main menu loads. The files are present in the directories mentioned. I have SDL 1.2 and OpenAl-0.0.8 running.
The vdrift version I have is from svn, not the latest, around 1 month old. The log files created in /.vdrift/ are empty.
Note to user: All error messages will be put in /root/.vdrift/logs/.

1) Don't run any programs (and espacially games) as root that doesn't require it.
2) does the sound files exists on the given location?
3) Try again with the latest svn
4) Are you running mac?

Hi thanks, but its still not working.
1) vdrift is not running as root, and there are no other games running.
2) The sound exists in the specified folder and it plays using xmms.
3) I tried with the latest svn. Still get the same errors.
4) I am using Slackware Linux 10.2 kernel 2.4.31
What version of alut and SDL are you running?
Thanks

I'll be trying these all out soon, once I install Ubuntu Dapper, which may be done by this weekend.
The engine.wav file not loading is a whole different problem.
Can someone fill me in on the engine.wav story?

I printed the alut error right after the alutLoadMemoryFromFile function in sound.cpp:
Code: ALUT_ERROR_INVALID_OPERATION
The operation is invalid in the current ALUT state.
Any ideas?

SDL_gfx 2.0.13
SDL_image 1.2.4
sdl_net 1.2.4
But the problem is not SDL but the sound (so openal/alut)

Yeah that was initially when I got the error. I switched to a non-root account but I still got them:

I got the following:
openal 0.0.8
SDL-1.2.9
SDL_image-1.2.5
SDL_net-1.2.6
alut-1.0.1
No SDL_gfx, but that cant be the problem like you said.
Again, when I print out the errors, the loadWAVFromFile function returns with:
ALUT_ERROR_INVALID_OPERATION
ALUT has not been initialised. (from alut api)
I checked the return val of the alutinit function and it returns AL_TRUE
I have flightgear running and its also using alut and that works fine. They load the sound files differently using alutCreateBufferFromFile.

If it provides any clues i get a similar problem
can't open /dev/(sound)/dsp
then all the error loading .wav errors
Only i get them only as non root.

@clytle374
Do you have problems with other games that are using sound?
@nael
That tools/scons.py comes from the scons-local-0.96.1.tar.gz file?
If so, please install scons (0.96.1) and run scons (in the dir where SConsctruct is)

Same problem ...
I had the same problem. It compiled up fine but then there was no sound in game.
As it turned out, I had two versions of libopenal.so.0 installed - an older snapshot in /usr/local/lib and the current Ubuntu package in /usr/lib. Looking at the libraries that are linked to the vdrift executable, I realised it was pulling the /usr/local/lib version in and it probably should be using /usr/lib instead.
Invoking vdrift with the /usr/lib/libopenal.so.0 library preloaded worked fine - i.e.
LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libopenal.so.0 /usr/share/games/vdrift/bin/vdrift
I wonder whether having two sets of OpenAL development headers confused the SConstruct script.
