As a general consideration, try to minimize the number of steps required to re-assign a control as much as possible.Also, the system you mention wouldn't work because selecting a control such as Steer Left could, as you mentoined, have several keys or buttons or axes assigned. Changing or deleting needs to be specific to the bound key/button/axis, not to Steer Left. I propose a different system.I say we use a table approach (like is done in the old menus). The table has the first N bindings (N = 3 in the old menu system) but use icons combined with text instead of just text so we can increase N (something like a joystick icon, a number, a button icon, and a number to indicate joystick 0 button 4, for example). Each binding would also have, to the left of the icons, an X or minus button to delete that binding. If there are more than N things bound to the action, display a "..." button at the end of the row, and that would take you to a screen that just shows every single binding in the afore-mentioned icon and button format. The first column of each row (the heading column that says "Steer Left" or whatever) would have a + button to its left (or possibly multiple buttons, one for each device type) that would allow the user to add a binding. I can draw this up if it's unclear....
