Drift Competition Mode
I know you have a lot on your plate as far as this game goes, so take this more as an idea, rather than any kind of urgent request.Since this is is, after all, a drift racing game, it might be interesting to have a mode that mimics the drifting competitions growing in popularity where, rather than strictly trying for the best time, they also take style into account. You're judged not just on how fast you go, but on how sideways you get the car, how far away from the edge you are, and so on.I'm not quite sure how best to mimic such a thing. A simple way might be to have a vector for the car's direction, and for the way it's facing. That'd tell you the angle of drift. I imagine the speed and length of time for the drift wouldn't be too hard to calculate either. Based on criteria like that, a person could get points for each successful drift (where they don't spin out, hit anything, or do something else ungraceful). So, what does anyone think? Good idea? Terrible idea? Feel free to be brutal.

Drift Competition Mode
That's good stuff, dollo. The game keeps track of things like distance from the center-line, car orientation, car movement direction, wheel slip amount, etc, so it wouldn't be hard to do. I don't actually know much about drift racing competitions, so any further input about what is considered a high scoring drift would be appreciated.

Drift Competition Mode
I'm not terribly knowledgeable myself. I did find a rip of some Japanese drifting competition DVD, but it's lacking subtitles, so I have trouble determining what all is going on. From what I can tell, they have a bunch of judges who rate the driving, so it's all pretty subjective. A lot of the drifting looks very similar to me, but sometimes the judges get very excited for reasons I can't determine. I do know that how long you hold a drift, how big an angle you make, and how close to the edges you come are factors. Spinning out and running into walls and piles of dirt are bad of course. I think they award points based on how good a person's run is.I was sort of envisioning the drift racing equivalent of a Tony Hawk game or something. Let people drive around a course, and each drift around a corner visibly racks up points based on the above criteria. Then you could have a time/lap limited mode, and a free/practice mode. That might not be the way it's really done, but it's probably the best way to do it on a computer. It seems to be the way other judged sports have been translated.

This was what I was expecting, it says a drifting game but appearers to be a standard racing game (pretty good, just now what I was looking for).
if anybody gets a chance to look at need for speed carbon (the new need for speed game) that has a drift racing competition component to it, to show you how it is done in a game.

The reason VDrift is focused on drifting is because with our engine it is possible to drift. The tracks are not really drifting tracks but we do have some cars that are drift type cars. They're not all set up for drifting.
The Need For Speed series is known for its "arcade" feel, that is, the cars are often very easy to drive and the physics in this series is not very realistic. Thus don't expect VDrift to be anything like that. I haven't played NFS: Carbon and don't even know what system it's on, but I'm pretty sure it won't run on Linux so I doubt I'll be playing it ever. Either way, we generally develop in a way that we think is good, not just try to copy other games.
One thing you can be sure of though, VDrift will probably never be a "drifting-only" game, we like to let the driver decide how they like to drive.

 did you improve your japanese ?
NFS is not a reference, not as a drift simulator nor as anything else  the way the drift are measured in NFS is nothing but realistic
