Reusing car parts and sounds
small question, can't we make a central location in the game/repository for wheels/sounds etc. That way you can choose a sound for more then 1 car or more different types of wheels. That way we also spare room since the textures/wheels and sounds can be used for more than one car. You just make some extra lines in a car file that state:
wheel_type = custom picks up wheel files in the car's directory
or wheel_type = wheel1 pulls from a collection

It's something I've thought about... the only issue with that is if someone installs a car that uses tires/wheels you don't have installed, what should happen? How will installing new cars that come with custom tires work? Would the tires and the car data have to be unzipped into separate directories?

I think of the first possible problem like this: if somebody installs a car with no custom tires/wheels and he/she doesn't have the standard wheel pack installed he will automatically use a set of default wheels.
Problem 2 is also thought about: if somebody builds a car with custom wheels he just puts the wheel files in the directory of the car like we do now. If done like this vdrift has to look for custom wheels first and if not found it will use the wheels that are mentioned somewhere in the .car file.
