How to edit the car info file?

Can anyone give tips/advice on editing the attributes for cars? I dont like the E30 M3 setup. I drive one personally and the final drive and everything are all wrong.

For each car model, there's a .car file in data/cars/[model] under your Vdrift directory. It is just a plain text file, so you could edit it under WordPad, TextPad, etc. You'll find info such as engine power, torque curves and gear ratios there.

For more info on those settings, go to the Car Definition File section of http://wiki.vdrift.net/index.php/Creating_cars . One important thing to note is that most units are in metric MKS, eg engine power in Watts, torque in Newton-metres (Nm). See also http://vamos.sourceforge.net/vamos-docs/...html#Units

Hi Yoshi, I saw some pics on your site of your car and it looks very nice. I'm glad you're interested in the E30, it needs some work for sure. There is only a little info about the car definition file on the VDrift wiki, but the link to the Vamos docs is useful at least a little. The transmission settings are pretty self-explanatory, if you look at the car file:

So whatever the real value is, for instance if the final drive is 4.0:1, then change the line to read "final-drive = 4.0" and that should be correct.

Are there any other settings/values you're not sure about? We need to document an entire car file on our wiki and tell about reasonable value ranges and the units the value is in. In the meantime, ask away, and play around with the numbers in there, to see how different settings change the feel. It also helps to record replays when you change the settings so you can watch the car on the outside to see how it responds to you driving. This is impossible to see while using hood or in-car cameras, and hard to look at the outside of the car and drive normally...

Thanks for all the input guys. I personally drive the 325i model instead of the M3 which is an inline 6 cylinder which makes less power but has much more low end torque and much different characteristics due to it's single overhead cam. As far as the M3 model goes, the HP is dead on but the redline is 6200 and peak hp is at about redline. The steering angle is about right but my file has 60 just to make it easier to control a drift with the keyboard. The M3 rear diff is also 4.10 ratio to make up for its lack of low end torque.

What is the measurement for mass in? Can someone explain the friction numbers and radius of things as to what they effect? What is the anti-slip number in the differential?

I dont understand the clutch numbers at all.

Also, Is there any way to change the distribution for AWD cars? If its 50/50 by default, its very wrong for most cars.

Check http://wiki.vdrift.net/index.php/Creatin...ition_File for a description of the car definition file. The weight distribution (as well as the moment of inertia tensor thing) is calculated based on where you assign weights.

If anyone is interested when I was making the XS I set up a spreadsheet to calculate the center of gravity from some weights. It would be nice if maybe we had something like the joystick info option that would show live car parameters while driving...like location of CG, alignment values as the suspension changes, the amount the wheels are turned, that kind of thing. This would really help with debugging and tuning cars...
