The vdrift ABS is modeled after how real-life ABS systems work. Real ABS systems detect when the wheels are decelerating faster than they should (starting to lock up), decrease the brake pressure, detect when the tires are gripping again, increase the brake pressure, and repeat that rapidly. The idea is that if you do this correctly (there's some additional fancy math that occurs) you'll be oscillating around the point where your tires are maxing out their grip capability. VDrift does this too.
