I managed to get the full 900 degrees working OK on the G25 wheel and was thrilled (for a while)....

My limited knowledge of C, compilation and IDE software meant that I could not quite get your code to compile to a useable state so, instead, I essentially used bits of your code within the demo file from libusb-0.1.12. (the file testlibusb.c) and then simply used sudo make to get an executable.

I had been trying to use usb_control_msg before you made me realise that usb_interrupt_write is much more appropriate and easier to use. I added the code into the print_device(.....) function of libusb-0.1.12 demo file (testlibusb.c) and compiled & ran it as root. Note that, as root in a shell console, I manually unbound and rebound the interface before and after running testlibusb. Not very elegant, but just within my capabilities and it got the job done.

When successful, the usb functions returned the following:
usb_claim_interface ---->status=0 (OK); usb_interrupt_write ----> returned 7 (which corresponds to the number of bytes sent, as expected); usb_release_interface ----> status=0 (OK)

I have not experienced any of the problems you mentioned; however, I did find deadzone problems.

I'm puzzled: The first time I did the four steps, the wheel responded absolutely perfectly. Full 900 degrees and _no deadzone_. It was tested with the TORCS driving simulator and, more objectively, with jstest /dev/input/js0.
It was fantastic! (Even under WinXP, with proprietary Logitech drivers I remember having a deadzone of approx +/- 15 %).

However, after performing the '4 steps' again, the wheel had a very large (+/- 45 degrees!!!) deadzone. I haven't been able to get it back to its perfect state. After a reboot, it went to its previous 'default' state (limited to approx +/- 90 deg steering including +/- 15 deg deadzone) but sending the 7 bytes to it again resulted in 900 deg incl +/- 45 degree deadzone. Very disappointing and still not understood. Especially now that I know _no deadzone_ is possible.

I'm still persevering to replicate the full 900 degrees and zero deadzone. I'll post here if I learn anything new.
