I wouldn't say that, and it certainly can't be halfed. I don't know as much as you about the physical engine, but I know the principles and if the frequency is too low, we lose realism no matter how good the engine is.

Well try it out for yourself. Last night I changed it to 100 fps. I can't tell a big difference, and AI games are a bit faster. However we really do need to optimize that collision code, either with ODE or something else, as Joe says that's definitely more the bottleneck than the rate at which the physics are updated.
