I begin with 2 circles around the wheels. Then I extrude some vertices to connect the bottom. then I model the door and the rest of the side. If thats done the basic shape of the car is already visible. I don't use subsurf because that will get you to a very high poly count very fast. I just extrude vertices until the shape is made and then work my way from there.
