it's a problem with your driver not liking the bit depth of the game versus X. the game defaults to 16-bit.

try editing runtime/lists/videoconfig (or create it if it's not there) and put in these values:

1024 768 32 0

you can also try

1024 768 24 0
or
1024 768 0 0
or
1024 768 0 1
or
1024 768 32 1
