Smoke hangs around when game is left

I've noticed that if there's a lot of smoke on the screen when the game is paused, then let's say the player selects Leave Game, the smoke is still visible in the menu, even though all other elements of the game have been destroyed and the car/track are no longer visible. In some cases (autox) I have been able to return to the game and the smoke is still there, hanging motionless in the air. I haven't tested this recently but I think it went away after more smoke was created.
