New vdrift ubuntu packages running under Dapper

Hi All,Has anyone loaded the new ubuntu packages under Dapper? I am getting colored boxes in menus and in-game where there should be fonts. Otherwise the game seems to work great. Outstanding release! I'm loving road atlanta.ThanksHardwareell Inspiron 9300 1.86Ghz PM 1GB RamGeForce Go 6800 256MB

I haven't tried it in Dapper yet, I'm still running Breezy on my laptop until the official release in April. Want to try compiling from source?The problem is related to textures - are any of the other textures in the game messed up like that? Perhaps the speedometer or other HUD graphics in-game? Does it complain about a missing font file on your console when you run the game, or in ~/.vdrift/logs/font.log? Any other error messages?Usually this will happen if the OpenGL context is lost, this can happen on Windows when you change resolutions, and we must reload all our textures. But then most of the other textures will be messed up too. It's possible that there's something different about some library in Dapper that causes it, but I can't think that SDL_image would have changed so much...nice laptop btw 8)

All the logs are empty. Dapper is using:libsdl-image1.2 libgl1-mesa_6.4.1xserver-xorg_7.0.0So who knows where the problem really is. What graphics chipset does your laptop have?

I have an IBM thinkpad R31 with Intel i810 graphics (shared video RAM)...it's very slow. I can compile and install VDrift on my laptop, but it's not very playable.If you're interested in compiling from source, SVN would be the best place to start. Check the FAQ's for how to do this or stop by IRC and we'll help you out.

I successfully compiled vdrift-2006-02-21-src but it segfaults at launch. How do I troubleshoot this?

If you installed the nvidia drivers from the nvidia-glx package in Ubuntu, you'll also need to install nvidia-glx-dev to get the GLX headers. The build system finds the GLX headers in the kernel (not the nvidia ones) and uses those if you don't have nvidia-glx-dev installed, so it tries to use that and fails to set up a window (causing the segfault).Sorry I forgot to mention this when I told you to try compiling.

Ah nevermind I found the problem. I have Xgl/compiz installed. Normally if I log in to my standard gnome xsession that doesnt start compiz (the Xgl compositor) then OpenGL games work fine. Seems with vdrift that I have to disable gdm from firing up Xgl at all (in gdm.conf-custom). With Xgl disabled in this way the fonts display properly in the ubuntu .deb version. Also fixes the segfault in the version that I just compiled. Seems that vdrift isnt compatible with Xgl xserver. Ah living on the bleeding edge. Thanks for your help.

Ah, Xgl...I've seen the demo video and it looks sweet! Ideally, VDrift should work under this system (I saw in the demo that Quake3 does)...so I wonder, what might be causing this? Is there something special we need to change or add for this to work? planetpenguin-racer uses libsdl1.2 and works fine under the Xgl server as long as compiz (Xgl compositor) is not running. Maybe their doing something different setting up OpenGL?

Oh BTW the segfault on the vdrift version that I compiled from source went away strangely. Now it acts like the ubuntu .deb release with boxes where the font textures are.

OK, sounds like it's mostly working. Did you have to recompile to get it to stop segfaulting or just turn off compviz?

Ya the segfault was due some remnant of compiz interacting with the Xgl server even after compiz was unloaded. I had to reboot and load a Gnome session w/o compiz to get the segfault to go away. BTW ppracer was segfaulting under compiz as well.The font texture problem is definitely caused by running vdrift under the Xgl server. Chasing down the cause at this point probably isnt worth the effort until Xgl gets more testing under different hardware. At the moment I'll just disable Xgl and reboot whenever I want to play vdrift.

OK, I think I see now. Yes, I guess it'd be best to wait til Xgl is more stable...by the way, did you compile with GCC 4? On Ubuntu Breezy if you compile with g++-4.0 instead of g++-3.4 it will work, but when you play the car physics are messed up. Could it be that this bug is gone in Dapper? :o
