Freezes up
Every time I try to open VDrift on my computer, it freezes up and I have to forcequit. My computer (powebook G4) is less than 6 months old so it runs great. I have no idea why it's doing this. Anyone got any sugestions?

hello
to be able to help you we need some more details:
⢠i presume you are running mac os x on your PBG4, what exact version?
⢠which version of vdrift does this happen with, do other versions work fine?
⢠what is the output in /Applications/Utilities/Console.app while trying to run vdrift...
⢠what exactly do you mean with freezing? what do you see on-screen?

I am indeed on a Powerbook G4, version 1.5 (basically the one that was out right before the Macbook). It's OS 10.4.6 (the newest OS available)
the version of VDrift I have is 2006-02-20 (febuary 20 of this year). It's the one available on the Apple website (under downloads)
It says a bunch of stuff on the console when I try to run it, mostly saying certain things haven't been found. it does say:
"The version of your config file does not match the version of VDrift.
You may have problems running the game. Delete your ~/.vdrift/VDrift.config
to fix this."
but all I have on my computer is an application, so I don't know what to delete
by freezing I mean there is a blank white box that appears on my screen, which then freezes (my mouse becomes a spinning wheel and I have to force quit)

thats indeed very weird and something we might want to fix...
could you post the complete output in Console.app?
also, does the previous release ( http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/vdrif...g?download) run fine?
did vdrift ever run fine for you?
does deleting the folder VDrift in "~/Library/Preferences/" help?

I've never tried VDrift before, but if you tell me where I can get an older version I can try that...
I went to the library, preferences, but there was no VDrift folder there.

JJP22 Wrote:Do you know where I could get an older version? i wrote the link already in my previous post, here is it again:

JJP22 Wrote:I went to the library, preferences, but there was no VDrift folder there. but the log-output you kindly posted told us that it this folder is indeed there...would you mind looking for it again?
i really have no idea what's going on here, but the 10 thousand mac-downloads of the last version suggest that this is an uncommon problem.
i suspect that this problem/logoutput could be created by only copying the vdrift application, but not it's whole folder / data folder to another place, and then trying to start it...so it would also be interesting if you get the same problem if you re-download the latest release and start it right from the folder that should be created on your desktop/download folder.

I am SUCH an idiot!!!! I reinstalled it, this time dragging the data and doc folders with the actual application itself to my HD, instead of just the application. It now works great. Sorry to waste your time, and thanks for the help.

thelusiv Wrote:Maybe it would help to add a little something to the install instructions so its clear that all the things must be copied, not just the application.
it's already explained quite clear in the ReadMe / FAQ, also 90% of all Mac-apps are installed in the same way, so i doubt there is much room for improvement on our side.
well 2 things come to mind:
⢠if vdrift can't find it's data folder it should perhaps pop up a helpful dialogue instead of "freezing up" (this is pretty much a cross-platform issue)
⢠we could place the data folder inside the so-called "application bundle" (on mac os x) so that vdrift appears as one big self-contained executable, but that would make it more difficult to add new cars, etc.
[well thats not a big issue since there are no addon-cars floating around and anyone capable enough to create additional content should also be able to open the application-bundle to locate the data-folder. we could also do it like wesnoth (which has an excellent mac-port) and display menu-items to "reveal" the data folder when running windowed. there should be no problems with upgrades as we don't provide data-diffs and always necessitate full-downloads anyway]
i think i'll make this change so this issue can't come-up again... (if there are no objections)
btw. SDL 1.2.10 (and satellite-libraries) was released yesterday and i'll switch the mac-port soon
