Do I need more cars and tracks? - norv - 08-16-2008

Hi and thanks for Vdrift!
I got version 2008-08-05 compiled on debian sid amd64.
Seems to run well but I am car sim newbie...

I only have about 5 cars and 5 tracks.
Is there another data download I need to get? I just got vdrift-2008-08-05-src.tar.bz2 .
It says on the main page that is a full data download.

More cars and tracks are available. To get them follow the directions here:
http://wiki.vdrift.net/Getting_the_development_version#Checking_out_the_data

If you run svn export instead of svn co it'll just grab one copy of the data (~1.2GB last time I checked) instead of the two copies it normally gets when it retrieves a repository.

Thanks Joe! I got the full data download.

I used to be a motorcycle courier in Melbourne so it is a great pleasure to drive round the Albert Park track. I have delivered parcels to most of the buildings visible in the game, sailed boats on the lake, and had various adventures on the roads used for the track so it brings back a lot of memories. Very realistic!

These days I am recovering from a severe spinal cord injury I sustained in a MTB stunt. I do a lot of music and spent a month learning Blender a while back so maybe I can contribute something to Vdrift sometime down the track.

Thanks again for Vdrift!

Hey, I'm glad you like it. Many of the tracks are conversions from other games so if you'd be able to contribute something original it'd be most appreciated. There's some info in the wiki about how to make cars or tracks.

I am new here and I am confused as to how to add tracks and more vehicles. I went to the link, but had trouble understanding what to do. I am running it on The newest Mac Osx Leopard

Unfortunately there's no really easy way to get new cars and tracks. This is probably the easiest way:

For cars:
http://vdrift.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/vdrift/vdrift-data/cars/

For tracks:
http://vdrift.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/vdrift/vdrift-data/tracks/

At each of those links you'll see a list of folders where each folder is a car/track. If you see a car/track you're interested in, click on the folder to go inside it. Then, click the "Download GNU tarball" link at the bottom of the page. That will let you download an archived version of the folder. I'm not familiar with OSX but I bet it's probably got a built-in way to uncompress the .tar.gz archive. Then you just move the uncompressed folder to the vdrift/data/cars (or vdrift/data/tracks) folder. Simple, right? Tongue
