Vdrift stuttering 3D - machuidel - 02-03-2008

Hello. I just compile and installed Vdrift SVN 1933 under Ubuntu Gutsy Linux. My video card is an ATI Mobility Radeon X700 using the latest closed-source drivers from AMD/ATI. I am not using Compiz.

When playing a race or doing a practice the game is hanging about every 2 seconds for 0.5 second. Like its stuttering. The sound is just fine and does not stutter. The game is unplayable like this because it seems to confuse the physics a bit (I am not sure). I have tried almost every video (drivers, resolution, shaders on/off) and audio (also different alsa setups) setting imaginable.

When playing I get the following on the terminal: OpenGL error on FBO create

The card supports the following: drawbuf4 auxbuf0 antialiasing anisotropy16 cubemapping shaders multitexturing16(8) texture_rectangle depth_texture shadow framebuffer_objects

I alsoe get the following error after "Loaded shader package depthgen": OpenGL error after shader loading is complete

Everything else is being reported as fine.

Please let me know if you need more information.

Thank you in advance Wink

I have a similar problem. I'm also on linux but with a NVIDIA 8600Gt

Usually I can get 80+ fps at 1280x800 with anisotropic filtering at 4x and AA at 4x but it drops way down (under 30) when I go around certain corners but when the cornering is complete it picks up again. To cope I've turned off the AA and filtering so now it drops from 90+ fps down to 35 or so -- noticeable but manageable.

My guess is this has to do with the quick change in visibility when going through turns but I don't know the code.

machuidel: have you tried playing with the display settings to make it faster? You can also turn shaders off, that might help performance quite a bit.

TF: I tried the latest vdrift on another computer. That computer has an NVIDIA inside (don't know exactly which one). It does not stutter like on my PC, but has exactly the same problem you described. When taking corners, especially when the car flips upside down it starts to stutter like crazy. When I manage to escape the corner everything is smooth again.

thelusiv: I've disabled almost every possible setting. Disabling shaders, disabling shadows / reflections, disabling sound and changing the resolution. It does not improve. I think this problem is not related to any video setting.

My thinking was that it could be the physics engine causing this.

What CPUs do you guys have?
