Cant install n Ubuntu Edgy 6.10 - DaFeBa - 05-23-2007

Hi:
I'm DaFeBa aka KSkins.
This is my second atempt to intall vdrift, the previous one was via the Add asistant of ubuntu. and did'nt downloaded correctly.
This time i found the deb files at getdeb.com I download both minimal and full debs and the main file. The install went well and without errors, but when I try to run de game...

This it's; frustrating! my friend using Kununtu 7.04 didn't hace any problems, but I'm the one with several cars made with blender wating to get converted :,(
It's any other solution beside chaging my OS?

That error sounds like SDL (libsdl.org) isn't working properly on your computer. Do you have it installed correctly? Do any other SDL or openGL applications work for you? What graphics card are you using?

I have some other games like Sauerbraten and Open Arena. Blender and Google Earth works just fine.
I have a GeForce4 MX440 on a AsRock K8 M800, 512 Mb of RAM.

Have you tried the autopackage?

You can download it from
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=137283

Just run sudo ./vdrift*.autopackage in the console.

i think the mx440 is the problem. i also tried to install vdrift on a ubuntu laptop with this card and had the same problem.

I too have a geforce 440 mx 8x AGP with Ubuntu 7.04 and it works perfeclty.
I do have a desktop system, and NOT a laptop.

i have tried on X and It doesn't even decompress, I will try with console
(2 minutes later...) Using:

$ sudo package install VDrift-2007-03-23-full.package

the package worked!! it's intalling, I hope this time works.

Even worst message!!! itÅ like some files are missing. they aren't there.
Â¿should I install the minimal pack or something else?

You are the second person who has reported using this package in a short time. This package is no good, you need VDrift-2007-03-23-full-2.package. The old one was taken off SourceForge long ago, where did you find it?

The problem here is that this package is not good. I guess I need to have a talk with the admin at getdeb.com. I have bolded a few things in the output that show the problem. It's trying to pull data files from /usr/games/data - this is not even a vdrift directory. It probably doesn't exist at all. Check on your system and see if it does. Clearly the person who built this package does not understand how VDrift is supposed to be installed, has tried to force it to work like a more traditionally structured unix program, and the result is the game will fail to run.

Since these are the only available debs I know of for VDrift (license issues block them from being included in Debian) it is safe to say there are no working debs of this version of the game.

Oops! :oops: I always forget to update those links. Sorry, I'll fix them. If you install the working autopackage it will automatically uninstall the other one.

You might consider trying the source package if this doesn't work. You just need the src tarball and one of the data tarballs.

:oops: Sorry to keep anoying, but I get similar "can't find ... file" with the new autopackage.
i spent half and hour trying to copy files to comply all the requieriments, but is like I have to triplicate the info of the game...
Adn maybe it's this version of ubuntu, but, I can't uninstall the game, it says that /usr/bin/autopackage-manager-gtk does not exist.

Yeah I know, I should put Festy, but then I have bugs with the video card and I have to use the X on 800 x 600.

This is driving me nuts... I have to take a break.

Ok, i tried with the minimal and the full package and neither worked.

I can't understand the data structure of files...

My usr/local/games looks like this

Were Bin and data are in the same level, but from the error I understand that data it should inside the bin directory.

Alright, things look like they're in the right place now. But it seems you have an old config or something confusing the game.

Do the following:
Remove the autopackage:

Code:
sudo package remove vdrift

Remove the debs (this should work, not entirely sure if it's just right)

Code:
sudo apt-get remove vdrift vdrift-data

Remove your ~/.vdrift

Code:
rm -Rf ~/.vdrift

Reinstall the -2 autopackage as you did before. Better to just try with the minimal one for now so it doesn't take so long. You can install the full one later, it will replace it properly.

Let us know how this goes, and be sure to include the output as you have before. You're getting close...

HI: I installed the minimal that I already downloaded, it work, but when i tried go to practice mode the game crash with a segmentation error (the error was in spanish, I think that's the correct traslation). Thn I realized than the minimal was NOT -2 package, so did all the work again with the full and...

Finally the game works.

I Hope soon i will be posting something more interesting that errors... when i learn how to put my cars ingame.
