Drivetrain loss and others? - reece146 - 11-07-2006

Is there a drivetrain loss associated with the choice of FWD, RWD or AWD?

Are dyno torque curves measured at the crankshaft or the wheels appropriate for the [ engine ] section?

The "torque-curve-??" numbers are in N-m, right? "torque-friction" is what? .03% (in CS.car) is way too low to be a drivetrain loss...

"max-power" is in Watts? "peak-engine-rpm" is where this max-power occurs?

Is "fuel-consumption" supposed to be at BSFC or is it just a fudged average across the entire RPM range? I noticed the cars all used the same value. Units? [liters / s]?

Thanks.

All good questions. Good, difficult to track down questions. ...

I'm not sure if there's a drivetrain loss associated with the choice of FWD, RWD or AWD. You'd have to look at the Vamos code.

I believe the torque curves should be measured at the crankshaft, but I'm not sure. The torque curve numbers are Nm. The torque friction is in percent (0.03 = 3%).

Max-power is in watts. Peak engine RPM is where max-power occurs. Max-power and peak engine RPM are used to generate a torque curve if you don't specify one. Peak engine RPM is also used for placement of the red-line graphic whether or not you specify a torque curve. I realize that's silly, but no one has noticed yet, and soon we'll have custom gauges anyway. :-)

Fuel consumption is calculated with the following equation:
Code:
m_fuel_consumption * m_rotational_speed * m_gas * time
Rotation speed is in radians per second. Gas is the gas pedal position. Fuel consumption is from the car definition file. Units are whatever the gas tank capacity units are (probably liters).

In general, to help find out what these settings do, look in vamos/body/Car.cc function Car::LoadCarDefinition. This will show you how the car's classes are manipulated based on the settings in the file, and you can then track down how those classes use the values.

Thanks joe!

I'll take a look at it tomorrow evening. Just in from changing the power steering in one of the daily drivers and it's almost midnight here. No hacking tonight. Sad

If you have a "good" torque curve (55 values in 100 RPM increments) do you need to include the power peak? Will this conflict? It doesn't appear to but does one over ride the other?. It would be neat to have a way to show the "dyno curve" for an engine in the car selection menu. Sort of a second chance at a sanity check. Maybe as part of the future car sub menu we were talking about in that other thread...

I agree it'd be nice to show the torque curve. I'm sure this would be included in some sort of tuning menu, once it's put together. :-)

If you have a torque curve, definitely specify it. You still need to put the power peak, but if you supply the torque curve also, all the power peak is used for is placing the redline graphic on the tach.

Plus, the auto shift option now Smile
