make sure you have openal installed. It checks on that but maybe it doesn't return a good error for it (need to check that)

Just to give you an idea: I started coding on the autopackage.
Guess what OS I use: yep, Ubuntu Dapper Drake.
Thelusiv extended it further and he works too on Ubuntu Dapper Drake.

By the way, maybe you could use the Debian package.

Well actually, I keep meaning to install Ubuntu Dapper but never get around to it, since my Debian Etch system is running pretty well. That's what I developed on. The thing you're actually missing is libopenalut, the reason it doesn't report that is openal and it's related libraries are not in autopackage's friendly list of dependency packages. So we have set it up to just check directly for a library by that name, which for some crazy reason, doesn't print an error message when it isn't found (even though it's required). This is an autopackage quirk that's sort of out of our hands, though maybe there's something we can do about it (I'm not sure yet).

Anyway the solution is to fire up your package manager, and search for "alut". You should come up with a package called something like "libopenalut". I believe installing this will also force you to install libopenal if you don't have it, but make sure you have it anyway (seach for "openal").

Hey...

Tks for help. I Installed the package libalut0 and it brings the package libopenal0a as a dependence. This is the names of packages on Ubuntu Dapper Drake.

This works fine... Tks guys! Keep doing this great work!

I have the same problem on Suse 10.1
I installed openal and freealut from openal.org (funny though that the two packages did not match in their depencies. freealut wants libopenal.so.1 but openal doesn't provide that)
So I made the appropriate link in /usr/lib
Still no luck.

I managed to compile the game but unfortunately I have gcc 4.1 and the cars are only bouncing, and I cannot install gcc 3.x just to compile this game.
Couldn't you just release the binary file vdrift. I assume that is all I need to get it working.

Regards
Jan

Hi Jan, welcome to the forums. Smile

So is there perhaps another ALUT package available? Personally I'm confused about FreeALUT vs OpenALUT, I don't know if they're different versions or what.

edit: I kinda misread that, I see you got it from OpenAL.org and not SuSE packages. Doesn't SuSE provide some packages for OpenAL and friends? Also, are you sure that you've got OpenAL installed correctly? Have you found any other people with the same problem of mismatched dependencies?

The gcc4 bug has been fixed in our SVN repository. If you'd like to checkout the code, it should work, plus you'll get a few other new goodies that have been added since the last release. Right now would be a good time because the latest SVN is not broken in any way. There are also some new fixes for sound bugs that may make it easier to get working with the libraries your system provides. This FAQ entry explains how to check out VDrift from SVN: http://vdrift.net/faqman/index.php?op=view&t=18

Rather than release a binary of VDrift besides the Autopackage, it would be nice if someone who ran SuSE would make a good package for that OS and we can release that.

- snoopy161 - 08-29-2006

yes Suse provides packages for openal but not for alut so vdrift can only be compiled with old_openal, but that would not be problem.
I just grabbed the slack.tgz and took the binary. That worked out ok, but I'm going to try the svn-version. Why are you checking for alut anyway if the game can run without it?
The autopackage-system was meant to depent on any distribution and I think you should try to keep it that way so it should not be a big deal to creat an rpm-package for Suse.

Regards
Jan

I wonder if perhaps the next version of SuSE will include a newer version of OpenAL, since the version with ALUT split into its own library is not that old yet, many distributions haven't picked it up yet. Also OpenSuSE might have it.

Autopackage is very good for our releases, because it makes distributing generic Linux binaries much simpler, but having distribution-specific packages increases the likelihood of VDrift getting included in repositories where users can very easily find, download and install them. This is of course pretty good for the project 8)

We check for ALUT because the game does indeed need it to run, unless compiled with the old_openal flag. The autopackage was compiled with old_openal off, so it has to have an ALUT library present, hence the need to check for it. Unfortunately I'm not sure if it's possible to make an autopackage that can work with both the older OpenAL and the newer one. The autopackage developers suggest including the library along with VDrift in our releases, so that everyone has to use the same version, and we may do this, but I want to find a way to do it that doesn't include importing the entire OpenAL source into the VDrift source tree.

- snoopy161 - 08-30-2006

I tried the svn-version this morning, and compiling went without a glitch, and now the cars drive along the road instead of bouncing :-) nice work there.

I have some issues with the performance though my hardware is good enough. I will post that in the bugs-section.
Just short: when running the game i get fps up to 60 and more but occassionally the graphics stops just completely for half a second or so.
I think this is not related to the graphics but to the code in the driving-engine.

You guys got really a long way since i lasted checked vdrift half a year or so.
I like the absolut realistic driving-experience along with "normal" cars, not just the 300+ PS ones :-)
