Network play broken? - jaddin - 08-09-2006
Is the network play not working in the latest release? I can't seem to get them to connect. Even when I monitor the traffic at the packet level I do not see anything from the game.

Hmm, this is possible. It has been a while since this has been tested much and I think some changes may have left it broken. There was someone on the forum a while ago who said they might work to improve the network code, we really need someone to give it a lot of attention, we (Joe & I) are very busy with other aspects of the game and don't know a whole lot about it. Perhaps when we catch up on some things for the next release we'll look into at least cleaning up what's there.

...preeeetty sure it's broken.
The code that's in there right now was a hack by me to just get some network play; it only supports two players, there can be no interaction between the cars, and the cars are not synchronized. I wrote the code with the expectation that it'd be re-written later with better code. I haven't gotten around to doing the re-write, since it'd be a more substantial effort. I could try to go in and hack the old code to work again, but I'm not sure if that's worth the time.

That's too bad. I really like the network play. I have some experience with network communication code but I'd need to learn enough about the rest of the code to integrate it properly. That would probably take quite a bit of time.
Anyway, thanks for the reply. I am really impressed with the rest of the game. Nice work!

How can we set the host's ip and port?
I'm using a G5, I can erase numbers but I can't write over them.
Does it works for this last version and what were your ping while you tested it(if I race against my brother, the ming wold be under 5ms but over 200ms against someone else)?
