Smile Ya chasing bugs on Xgl would be hard unless you have access to graphics cards from both ati and nvidia. This laptop has a replaceable graphics card and I thought about scoring a cheap ATI X300 to swap out for my Nvidia when I'm tshooting.

Good point about Xgl...since you had success with g++-4.0 then I think it really was related to the libc that was distributed with the distros mentioned earlier. This confirms it, we suspected this before because some reported building without problems on Apple and AMD64 systems using g++-4.0 without problems.
