Ideally you should have latest data(warning multiple GB) using svn:

Thanks, that did it!

I have now updated the po file with lots of missing strings. I will send it once I've finished the translation to make sure I haven't made any mistakes.

Overall, it would be good if menus could be a bit wider - the main menus and the left column. There is still ample space on 800x600 resolution. The German translation also seems to struggle with string length.

Here's the promised update of the gd.po. Maybe you could do some gettext magic and add the new strings to the pot file and the other languages' po files?

Strings missing in i18n:

I went through all the screens and noticed that some strings that I added to the po file don't translate:

All menus: "On", "Off"

Replay menu: "None"

All in-game strings: "Lap Time", "Last Lap", "Best Lap", "Score", numbers, "MPH", "KPH", "ABS", "TCS", "Lap", "Place", "Ready", "GO", "You won!", "You lost"

Options / Display: skin names: "simple", "X1"

Keyboard button names, e.g. "new", "UP", "DOWN", "Up", "Down", "held", "once", "Held", "Once", etc.

Updates: while downloading: "connecting", "downloading"
Updates: "Cars/Tracks updates available" - how is it programmed, do we need %s here?

Car/Track Updates: "Update successful". Also, we need the error messages for translation.

Some other issues:

  1. String length (tested with simple skin only) - menus should be broader. For Gaelic, you can test that in e.g. Roghainnean / Grafaigeachd or the Practice Game menu. Please give a bit more room than needed for flexibility. We could also gain room for string length is menu titels would start on the left edge.
  2. Wrong string: Updates -> Cars: "Update this track to the latest version." instead of "Update this car to the latest version."
  3. X1 skin crashes on game restart when language is set to anything that's not "en".

X1 is outdated, would have to be rewritten to run with current gui code. Remove it.

I've planned a few changes to the skin, will adjust menu elements width too. There are still a few hard-coded bits that need to be moved into skin files, like the loading screen and the hud.

I think if we could get all translations up to date, it might be worth a release.

Hi,

I was starting to translate the strings to Brazilian Portuguese, but it seems that there are two problems in the pot file.

poedit give an error message in the:
"Automatically shift to neutral when no gear button is active, as with "H gate" shifters." I think that the (") should be escaped with a backslash (or single quotes should be uses instead, but I'm not sure about this)

It also complains with the 'Project-Id-Version' header still having the default value, but I don't know if that is really an error since GTranslator accept it.

po2cfg.py now also supports escaped quotation marks in po files: \"foo\"

Current translation status:
de: 94% (0 fuzzy, 24 not translated)
gd: 93% (9 fuzzy, 19 not translated)
ro: 65% (81 fuzzy, 65 not translated)
ru: 60% (82 fuzzy, 84 not translated)
uk: 66% (91 fuzzy, 52 not translated)

About the technical terms:

Ambient Occlusion:
A lighting effect, adds soft shadows to objects by looking at how much a pixel is obscured from light. http://http.developer.nvidia.com/GPUGems3/gpugems3_ch12.html

Anisotropic Filtering:
Texture filtering method. Makes textured surfaces look sharper at oblique angles. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anisotropic_filtering

Force Feedback:
In VDrift steering axis feedback (if you have a FF joystick/steering wheel) from wheel aligning torque.

To make them work properly in game there will be some more changes to the source code required, due to the way font rendering is implemented.
